Short Story

One day a man who had become set in his ways travels into the future.

At first he’s disoriented, to the point of becoming terrified.  He feels like he’s in a void … a seamless space, like being in a completely darkened room.

Suddenly, he hears a beautiful, loving voice. “Hello, Edward. Welcome.”

“What? Where am I? And who are YOU? I can’t see you.”

“It’s alright, Edward. Don’t be afraid. I’m not here to harm you.”

“Where is HERE?” Edward asked.

The voice responded, “Here is NOW, Edward. Confusing as it seems, humanity has had it all wrong for millennia. You all thought that time was linear. It isn’t. That is an illusion that you all made up so you could play the game.”

“What??? What game?”

“The game of life, Edward. You are really an eternal being, but humans thought it would be interesting, an adventure if you will, to separate themselves from Source and play with the ego instead. So you made up the rules of the game, one of which is linear time.”

“You see, Edward, there really is only NOW and there really is only HERE. If humans would stop playing the game long enough to realize that they are NOW HERE, life would be so much better; they would become more aware of what’s real and what’s not real. The past is gone and the future hasn’t happened yet, so what’s left?  Now … only now.”

Edward pondered what the voice had just said and remembered that on certain occasions, he had felt more “present” in his life. Like the times when he was playing with his boyhood friends, or exploring the woods behind the farm where he grew up in Missouri, or the time when he experienced his first kiss. And then there was the time when he looked at his baby daughter and saw her first smile. All moments that brought him such joy.

“I want those feelings again,” Edward said to the voice.

“It’s simple, Edward. But for you, it will take practice. Be present in all that you do. Talk less and listen more. Go within and hear the voice of your soul. It speaks to you all the time. You just need to listen. Love more. Fear less. Be at peace with your SELF.”

Be HERE NOW.  Be NOW HERE.
